most plants can be placed in the same way as buildings. a farmer, or logger (for trees) will bring a seed to the plant blueprint, then work to plant it. for grain crops, the farmer also needs to till the soil as part of planting.
plants have temperature and soil moisture requirements. if outside these comfortable ranges, their growth will be stalled. if very far out of these ranges for enough time, they will die. also, if outside these comfortable ranges, mice will not plant new plants, even if there is a blueprint to do so.
mature plants can be harvested. after harvest is complete, a blueprint to replant the plant will automatically appear.
dead plants will be cleared out by mice for no yield, but will return their seed, which goes into the blueprint to replant the plant (once comfortable temperature and moisture returns). this is a low priority task relative to planting and harvesting.
farmers can fetch water to water plants if they are at risk of drying past their comfortable range. this is a relatively low priority task.
non standard plants
herbs cannot be planted. they spawn wild in the world, given the correct season. most spawn on dirt. moon lily spawns on a water surface.
big trees, like oak, can grow to be very large, so that mice cannot cut them down. trunks and branches that are thick enough are considered “solid”, at which point they cannot be cut. instead, mice can climb and build on them. the non-solid thin branches can be flagged for harvest like normal plants, and they will be cut by loggers.
